I'm pretty sure every photographer has their favourite items that they use in every single session - it might be a favourite basket or beanie, or maybe a cute little felted heart. I have a few favourites of my own which I'll share below, and I betcha a couple of them might not be what you were expecting! Here's my top 5 list of items that I use in every single newborn session: 1. Beanbag - my posing beanbag is soo versatile - I can use it for so many different poses and props! Its really just like a big soft bed, I add different fabric drops to change the colour theme for the session, or add props like a newborn swing - baby can be lying down, or tushie-up, or anything in between! 2. Heater - I keep my studio at a nice comfortable temperature for the adults (the room is air-conditioned), and I use a little portable space heater around the space to keep baby super cozy and comfortable. This is perfect, parents are able to relax at a comfortable temperature (without raising a sweat!) and baby is nice and warm, relaxed and sleepy with the gentle heater on! 3. Shusher - ahh this is an amazing little tool! The Baby Shusher is perfect for settling unsettled bubs... I used to use a white noise app on my phone, but this is so much better, saves my phone battery and keeps baby nice and calm and settled. It also helps insulate baby against any sudden loud noises in the studio. I've had so many parents say (when their session is finished) that they are going straight to a baby store to buy one for themselves - that's how awesome it is! 4. The Perfect Posie - this is a cute little mini donut shaped beanbag created by an Australian Newborn Photographer - I use this in every session, whether as a stand alone prop, or under a beautiful soft curly rug. Its perfect for getting baby in that cute curled position, with all the support they need. They snooze so peacefully in this! 5. Last but not least, its Lavender Oil! Nope, not on the baby, on me!! When I have a newborn session scheduled, I'm very careful not to wear any perfume or overwhelming scents on my body, and just before baby comes through the door, I apply some lavender oil on myself to create a beautiful, calm and relaxed environment for baby, and families. So there you have it - my top 5 items that I use in every single newborn session. Did any of these surprise you? Hilary Hudson Photography

At the moment, we're having a relatively low-key school holidays, and I'm totally fine with that. Last weekend we went away for the night with friends, so this week I just wanted to have a few "home days" to get some things accomplished. The kids aren't totally thrilled with home days though, so I tempted them with a couple of old movies that they've wanted to watch for ages... the dreaded MUSICAL! Hubby hates musicals so he just rolled his eyes when I mentioned them. In fact, he walked in while one of them was playing, and promptly turned around and walked back out again! So this week I've treated the kids to three all-time classics: Annie Mary Poppins The Sound of Music I have not watched Annie since I was about 10, so that was a bit of a trip down memory lane!! I love Mary Poppins too, but I was curious to see how they would cope with The Sound of Music... given how long it is and how a lot of the plot points would go over their heads... well they loved it! Master 6 was quite fidgety towards the end (but it IS a pretty long movie) and Miss 8 cringes whenever there is a kissing scene, but overall it was a great success! And much to hubby's disgust, we've all been walking around the house singing musical songs all week :) I loved hanging out with Shayne, Nick and Alyssia for their maternity/family session with Shayne's gorgeous bump! Miss Alyssia is the sweetest little thing and those shy smiles were just so priceless. We were treated to some stunning afternoon light too - check out these favourites! And then beautiful newborn Amelia arrived and it was time for her newborn session! We held this session in the comfort of their own home, which meant Alyssia could play with her toys and do her own thing when she wasn't needed. Newborn Amelia was quite alert and wasn't keen on sleeping unless she was very firmly wrapped, but we were still able to get plenty of variety in her session and lots of family combinations too! Shayne's kind words: "Hilary done our maternity and newborn photos. The photos were just amazing! She was very patient and made us feel very comfortable. My husband liked the fact Hilary was quick with the photos. I could not recommend Hilary enough for any photos that your wanting done." Thanks so much to Shayne for capturing these "behind the scenes" photos of me at work with little Amelia! Miss 8 has suddenly become the fountain of knowledge in our house, and quite frankly its making me feel inadequate! Its like the time we were watching Millionaire Hotseat and a question came up about Pablo Picasso. We were staring blankly at the TV when miss 8 pipes up: "Hmm, Pablo Picasso - wasn't he the inventor of cubism?" Hubby and I looked at each other and laughed! "Um, I have no idea!!". So we googled it, and yes, wouldn't you know it, he was the co-founder of the Cubist movement!! She is full of interesting information at the moment. I was getting something out of the oven the other day, using my rubber/plastic oven mitt - so she then told me all about thermal conductivity and that plastic was a good choice of material for an oven glove. Then I got a lesson on various materials that conduct heat - although her theory that a wooden oven glove would be awesome because of its low heat conductivity, has some obvious flaws! So when she asked me this week if I learned about "Alliteration" when I was at school, my first thought was "Shit! Whats alliteration again?" I had to confess I couldn't quite remember exactly what it was... but never fear, she was ready with pen and paper to give me some good examples that she'd learned. For the record (and for those who've also forgotten) - here's an example: Lazy Lizards Lying or Betty Botter bought some butter Do you have a smarty-pants at your place? Leonie and Kris came for their maternity session at Tamborine earlier this year, and what a gorgeous couple they are! It was beautiful to see so much happiness and excitement in their eyes as they awaited the arrival of their little one, gender unknown! Here are some of the favourites from this session: And then came the arrival of a beautiful baby girl, Heidi! Leonie chose to do the newborn session in the comfort of their own home, which is a great option if you'd like to be able to relax in your own environment, and be free to put on a load of washing or make some lunch while you wait! Heidi was 9 days old at her session - with just the most perfect little face, and she did everything I asked of her and more, she was amazing! I have also added a before-editing/after-editing image at the bottom of this post, for those who like to see how these images come together. Leonie says: "We had our maternity and newborn shoots with Hilary. Hilary was awesome to work with and was amazing with our little girl! We are so happy with how the photos turned out. Thank you!" Thank you guys, it was so lovely to meet you all! So this week, Master 5 has perfected the art of whistling... and he has been practising over and over... and over! This kid is so determined, he whistles from the moment he wakes up, during breakfast and getting ready, and during the entire car trip to school. By the time we get to school, I'm white knuckling the steering wheel and clenching my teeth. I get that he is proud of mastering this skill, and I'm proud of him too - but I'm just hoping he will move on to the next thing VERY shortly! The tuneless, high pitched whistle is keeping the puppy alert too - especially when she is meant to be sleeping -in waltzes Master 5... whistling... and the puppy says "I'm not napping - it must be play time!" I remember when Miss 7 learned to whistle, she also learned to click her fingers at the same time - wasn't THAT a fun week! Beautiful miss Sofia was absolutely amazing during her newborn session! At 17 days old I wasn't sure how sleepy she would be, but she snoozed for the entire session and was an absolute dream to work with! Here are some of the favourites from the day, including a little "behind the scenes" of how we achieved the image with some super excited dogs: Below is an example of how I often gets images of dogs posing with the baby. Normally the pups are WAY too excited to sit still when there is a newborn baby beside them who smells so good! So I do the two shots separately and then create a composite image in Photoshop, as per the finished image below this one: Its a very special thing to be welcomed into somebody's home and be asked to capture some beautiful memories of their precious newborn baby... I know I am truly lucky to be able to do what I do and I get to meet the most wonderful people along the way. I visited Sasha and Kiernan in their home on Tamborine Mountain recently to set up my mobile studio in their living room. Sasha kindly took some "behind the scenes" photos as I worked with her super cute little man. It was also fun to create images which incorporate important family items such as the crystals and the guitar - giving these even more meaning to them. Lorenzo at 14 days new - some favourites and behind the scenes images: Can you hear that? Shhh... its the sound of silence. Its the sound of nobody fighting, its the sound of the nobody asking for snacks or complaining that somebody wont play with them... its all peaceful and quiet - ahhhh! Is that a bit over the top? Haha maybe, sorry - of course I totally love and adore my kids, but honestly, but after 2 weeks of school holidays, by the time Easter rolled around and everybody was home and overloaded on sugar, the crankiness & craziness set in and mummy had had enough. The Easter Bunny of course went crazy (despite my best efforts to hold back, I was thwarted!) and we are swimming in a sea of chocolate and lolly heaven here, as I'm sure most of you are too. Anyway, now that school is back, here's to a quiet and productive week to you all! I was totally thrilled to be asked to capture a newborn twin session recently - double the fun! Breanne and Russell did an amazing job at getting their two gorgeous boys to sleep, so much so that they slept for the entire session and made my job so easy! It was a super hot & sticky day so I set up my portable studio on their big deck area outside, and the boys snoozed through the whole thing! I say it all the time but I really am SO lucky to have this wonderful career, meeting so many lovely families and also getting to cuddle such amazing little babies! Here's a few of my favourites from the session, and also a few behind the scenes images showing our set-up - with thanks to Breanne! Thanks guys, I loved snuggling with your two precious little men!
Who doesn't love a beautiful love story? I know I do! I quite often stop and think to myself "I have the best job in the world!" - but sometimes, it just gets even better. I was contacted by Sarah a few months ago and we booked in her family shoot on the beach. I knew the shoot would include extended family who would be visiting from Brazil, which was quite exciting in itself, with the challenge of working around the language barrier! A few weeks later I heard from Sarah letting me know that her sister-in-law's boyfriend Leo was going to propose during the shoot! I knew right then and there that this was going to be awesome. We organized some extra time for the end of the shoot to capture this beautiful moment in their lives. Instructions and discussions had to be translated! We started by capturing some images of the Martelli family together, and can I just say, what a gorgeous bunch of photogenic people! So after capturing so many beautiful moments of the family, it was time for the surprise proposal! I'm not sure who was more excited and nervous, Leo, the family, or me! Leo took his beloved Leticia by the hand and led her along the beach, walking and talking and looking so in love... they stopped and shared a spontaneous kiss as Leo reached into his pocket... Of course, she said YES! A crowd had gathered behind us and they all clapped and cheered! The happy couple! Thank you so much Martelli family for allowing me to be a part of such a wonderful family occasion! Behind the scenes from this photoshoot - I spend a lot of time running back and forth, finding the right angles and the best light... and yes I do beach photshoots in bare feet! Its a great workout for everyone, and lots of fun too! :) Capturing that all-important shot of the ring... A very big thank you to Sarah for capturing these behind-the-scenes photos for me!
